A FCP7, P2, and Log & Transfer tip

So, I’m at my first day of the TED 2012 Fellows program today as an assistant editor (more on that later) and it’s already had its fair share of snafus and quirks. Here’s one that we had to deal with earlier, that I think is pretty useful.

We’re shooting these presentations and interviews on two Panasonic HPX170 cameras, shooting to DVCPRO HD on P2 cards. We only have two 64 GB cards, so on our second 90-minute presentation of the day, we had to use two 32 GB cards per camera in order to fit the whole presentation. Now, we only have one USB card reader for offloading the footage. This creates a problem though, since the media (which is all one take) spans more than one card. So when we pop the card in to FCP7 and open Log & Transfer, it looks like this:

Ugh. That’s gonna suck. Because now the file is broken up into 10 minute or so chunks. Not terrible, as we’re just going to lay out a stringout of both cameras anyway, but it’s slightly inconvenient.

However, I postulated that if we were to copy both cards off to our working hard drives (like we are with all our footage), and mounted both virtual volumes within L&T at the same time, the spanning would be recognized and one clip would be created.

Turns out, I was right. =] Problem solved, and a few precious minutes of time saved.

Do that thing they do on CSI and it should be fine.

This has also been stuck in my head for a few days. Thanks to History of Rock & Roll. Greatest class I’ve taken at Marquette. Little Richard is incredible and just awesome to watch.

Chuck Berry - “Maybellene”

Chuck Berry is awesome. Gotta love the duck walk. This song has been stuck in my head for two days.
